Soap Care Guide
Getting the Most Out of Your Handmade Soap
Handmade goat milk soap is a very different experience from the commercial bars you find at the grocery store — and that’s a wonderful thing! But because our soaps are crafted with real, natural ingredients and no synthetic hardeners or fillers, they do require a little extra care to get the most out of every bar. Follow these simple tips and your soap will last longer, lather better, and love your skin even more.
1. Keep It Dry Between Uses
This is the single most important thing you can do. Handmade soap is softer than commercial soap because it retains its natural glycerin — which is great for your skin but means it can dissolve quickly if left sitting in water.
- Always use a well-draining soap dish that allows water to run off and air to circulate underneath the bar
- Keep your soap away from direct stream of water in the shower — store it on a shelf or in a corner where it won’t get constantly splashed
- Allow the bar to dry completely between uses
2. Let It Cure
If you’ve just received a fresh bar, know that handmade soap actually gets better with age. A well-cured bar lasts longer and produces a harder, longer-lasting lather. Our soaps are cured before they ship, but if you have extras, store them in a cool, dry place to continue curing — they’ll only get better!
3. Store Extras Properly
If you’ve stocked up (smart move!), store your extra bars correctly to keep them fresh:
- Keep them in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and humidity
- Avoid storing in airtight containers — soap needs to breathe
- A linen closet, drawer, or open shelf works perfectly — and your stored soaps will lightly scent the space too!
- Use your oldest bars first and rotate your stock
4. Use a Soap Bag or Cloth
For extra lather and gentle exfoliation, try placing your bar inside a soap saver bag or exfoliating cloth. This also catches any small leftover pieces so nothing goes to waste.
5. Keep It Away from Heat
Natural oils and butters can soften or go rancid if exposed to high heat. Keep your soap away from windowsills in direct sun, hot car interiors, or steamy areas where it won’t dry out between uses.
6. Don’t Share with Your Shampoo Shelf
Handmade soap can absorb moisture from the air, especially in a steamy bathroom. Give it its own dedicated spot on a draining dish rather than a crowded shower shelf where it might sit in pooled water.
How Long Will My Bar Last?
With proper care, a standard bar of Soap Shack Farms soap typically lasts 3–4 weeks with daily use. Bars used less frequently or stored properly between uses can last considerably longer.
What About the White Coating?
You may notice a light white or powdery coating on your soap over time — this is called soda ash and is completely natural and harmless. It’s simply a reaction between the soap and air. It doesn’t affect the quality or performance of your bar at all — it will rinse away with the first use.
